History & Status of the Fishery
The northern pike gill net catch rates (CPUEs) has remained fairly constant from previous studies, and above the lake management plan recommendations. These CPUEs remain near median levels when compared to all lakes statewide that are ecologically similar and grouped into lake class #8. Although abundance has not fluctuated much the average weight has almost doubled to 4.6 lbs./fish, over twice the lake class median for this lake type, and of the 20 northerns sampled 45% were of age class 5 showing fast growth especially for young fish. Walleye were sampled for the first time in this study, with only 3 specimens being recovered. Walleye fry were stocked in 1986, 1987, and 1988 but, according to ageing techniques, the sampled walleye were of age class 6 and older concluding that these fish are from a remnant native population. The fry stocking done in these 3 consecutive years appears to have been unsuccessful and considering the centrarchid, perch and golden shiner populations, success in a supplemental walleye stocking program may be improved by the use of fingerlings. In the centrarchid species largemouth bass show normal growth rates for catch rates for this type of lake. Although the lake management plan long range goals are to maintain a gill net CPUE of 2.5, this catch rate has not been at this level since 1977 and is near lake class medians now. The bluegill CPUE for trap nets is well above lake class medians, but historically abundance has always been high with large numbers of young, small fish exhibiting normal growth rates. Black crappie populations have seen a steady gill net CPUE decline over the years with slow growth rates. Yellow perch abundance has increased dramatically from past studies and at the present time is over 4 times higher than lake class medians. Golden shiners also appear to be slightly more abundant and together with the perch they are providing a good forage base for predator species.
