What aquatic invasive species are found in Sand Lake?
There are some aquatic invasive species found in Sand Lake including zebra mussel.

Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

Walleye were sampled in gill nets at a rate (8.1 fish/net) within the expected range for the lake class. This was the same rate as the 2000 assessment, which was the highest since 1957. The average weight of walleye was within the expected range and the average length was 13.5 inches, the longest sampled was 25.8 inches. The size structure appears to be good with 38% of the fish sampled between 14-17 inches and good numbers of 7 inch walleye present. The growth rate was similar to the state average for all ages and 29% of the fish aged were from non-stocked year classes.

Black crappie were sampled within the lake class expected range for both gears (gill and trap net), a little higher than previous assessments. The size structure appears to be good with black crappie sampled up to 12.4 inches. The growth rate was similar to the state average for all ages.

Northern pike abundance still exceeds the expected range despite a minor decrease from the previous assessment. Historically, catch rates have generally exceeded the lake class third quartile for northern pike due to abundant spawning habitat. The size structure is considered poor; the longest northern pike sampled was 24.5 inches and 88% between 14-19 inches.

Yellow perch were sampled at the lowest rate since 1957 in gill nets, but still within the lake class expected range. The trap net catch rate was more consistent with historical catch rates. The yellow perch sampled were heavier than the expected range and averaged 7.9 inches, with the longest being 11.4 inches.

Historically, bluegill have been sampled below the expected range, however the catch rate was the same as the 2000 assessment, the highest since 1957, yet still lower than the lake class expected range. The size structure appears to be good and the bluegill had an average weight exceeding the expected range.

Tullibee were sampled in gill nets within the expected range, similar to the previous assessment. Lengths varied from 6.1-12.6 with a average of 8.5 inches. Other species sampled include black, brown and yellow bullhead, bowfin, golden redhorse, shorthead redhorse, pumpkinseed, rock bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and white sucker.
