History & Status of the Fishery

Noma Lake is a small, moderately deep lake located just north of Wirt, MN. The lake is only 55 acres but has a maximum depth of 53 feet. It has relatively clear, soft water. There are only 6 cabins on the lake. A U.S Forest Service campground can be found on the northwest side off County Road #31. The fish population is composed of the typical species usually found in small Minnesota bass-panfish lakes. Northern pike are moderately abundant and of quality size. In this survey, they ranged in length from 20.3-42.5 inches and had a mean length of 27.7 inches. The mean weight of those sampled was 5.5 pounds. Most of the northerns (84%) were age 3-5. Growth was very good, exceeding the statewide averges. Yellow perch were small and not abundant in this survey. This was the lowest catch in any of the past assessments. Black crappie although not large were sampled in good numbers. The mean length in the gill net was 7.7 inches while those in the trap nets were 6.9 inches. A four year old black crappie in the gill nets were 7.3 inches compared to the statewide average of 8.3 inches. Bluegill were abundant in Noma Lake. Of the 261 sampled, however, none were over 8 inches. The mean length of those sampled in the trap nets was 5.9 inches compared to those sampled in the gill net of 6.6 inches. Growth was very good but slowed in older fish when compared to the statewide averages. Largemouth are not adequately sampled in summer survey gear but were sampled in the spring electrofishing survey. Most were small with a average size of 10.1 inches. The largest largemouth sampled was 18.4 inches. Walleye were stocked several times in the late 1980's and again in 1996 and 2000 in an attempt to create a bonus walleye fishery. As in many other bass-panfish lakes like Noma, stocking results were poor. Although walleye have been caught by anglers in the past years and a few sampled in this assessment, this type of stocking is not cost effective and should be discontinued.

I have not been back since my latest report. Hopefully those pesky weeds have gone by now and the lake is back as it was in the '60s. I sit here now wishing I could return to the '60s and to Noma Lake. But what 74 year old doesn't wish such wishes. I have been going to northern Wisconsin for the past several years to a little lake named Van Vliet in Vilas county almost to the shores of Lake Superior. It is nice and I have caught a couple of Muskie that do not live in Noma but there are things missing. First my dear wife of the 1960s has passed on and my new wife of 21 years today is in the hospital and I am sort of reminissing. My second wife is from Georgia and several years ago when we talked of going to Minnesota she thought we were nuts. We live on Lake Seminole, one of the best bass lakes in the South and talking of driving 1500 miles to go fishing seemed a bit crazy. She went with us though along with my sister and her family. We had a wonderful time and she fell in love with Noma lake too. She loves to catch bluegills (brim down here). We haven't been able to get back and at our present ages and conditions it seems doubtful if we will ever make it. If someone reads this and then tries fishing Noma Lake please give me a report on Lake-Link messenger as well as a report on here. Thak you in advance Jack and Frances Gaither SeminoleJack Lake Seminole, Georgia. 8043 Spring Creek Drive Donalsonville, Georgia 39845

This being a glacial lake has been here for a very long time. When I first came upon the lake in 1959 the shoreline was ringed with grass at the water's edge just enough that the bass could get back in the grass. A plastic worm tossed just at the edge of the grass would often result in a fish. The five little bays in the lake were shallow and had clumps of large leaf lilly pads with openings between clumps so that a topwater lure fished around them often took some nice fish. The last time I was there something had happened to the lake. Something or someone had introduced a new weed somewhat like the lilly pads but with leaves only about 3-4inches. This stuff choked the openings between the old big lilies and all along the surface of the shoreline out for about 20 or so feet. This made it virtually impossible to cast into the shoreline. I am sure the fish are still there and if I were to get back I would find ways of catching them. However in a few days I will be 71 years old so I probably will not get the chance. There are some really big northern strain bass in there. We used to catch 5lb fish with regularity. I talked to the fisheries man about the weeds and he said sometimes these things run in cycles. I hope they cycle out soon. It is my most favorite lake in the World.

I first fished Noma Lake in 1959. Found it had many LM bass and bluegill. a few pike but no walleye or crappie. I spent 7 consecutive summers camping at and around the lake. Two summers We spent 11 weeks each summer camping in the area and fishing this lake almost daily. We always had good luck with bass and bluegill and an occasional northern pike. The largest pike I ever caught was around 40". Over the years we caught many over 30". It is a fine lake for family as the bluegills will almost always bite from shore and the bass being bass will co-operate when they feel like it. While pike are few there are some very large ones in the lake but difficult to get to hit apparently due to large population of bluegill and small yellow perch. I never saw a perch larger than about 8". It isn't a trophy lake but I have caught bass of 5 lb. many times. It is just a great little lake and easy to fish. In recent years the state has put some walleye in the lake but I don't know how they are doing as I have not been back there in several years. It is just such a pleasant place that I kept returning year after year even if I might have caught larger fish at other places. The campground is primitive so come self contained. Located across the road from Clear Lake which has both crappie and walleye if that is what you want to fish for. There are many other lakes in easy reach, each with it's own specialties in terms of species. This area remains so unspoiled that when I returned after a 15 year absence everything looked almost as it had when I left those 15 years earlier.
