History & Status of the Fishery

Walleye were sampled in gill nets at a rate of 5.5/net, within the lake class expected range and slightly below the previous assessment. This catch was the lowest observed since 1984 and below the management goal of 8.8/net. Lengths ranged from 10.6 to 24.6 inches with an average length of 17.2 inches. Size structure appeared to be favorable with a decent proportion of desirably sized fish despite lacking large individuals. A special regulation was implemented in 2005 to protect fish between 17 and 26 inches with one fish over 26 inches allowed. There were harvestable sized fish available to anglers since fish from 14 to 16 inches comprised 35% of the sample. Walleye from the 2012 spring muskellunge sampling indicated larger individuals were sampled and are likely underrepresented in the standard summer assessments. Lengths from the spring assessment ranged from 12.4 to 28.4 inches with an average length of 19 inches. Scale and bone analysis identified ages 1 to 11 in the 2013 sample with growth rates similar to the statewide average for all ages sampled. Walleye were typically 16.4 inches by age 5.
Muskellunge are not sampled well in mid-summer assessments and as a result only two were sampled (24.2 and 38.2 inches). Several spring assessments targeting muskellunge on Moose Lake have been done since 1981. Please refer to these reports for detailed information on this species.
Northern pike were sampled in gill nets at a rate of 2.9/net, near the low end of the expected range. Northern pike have typically been sampled in low numbers with a favorable size structure. Gill net sampled fish ranged from 17.6 to 34.4 inches an average of 24.4 inches. The 2013 gill net size structure was favorable and similar to 2012 spring sample. Lengths from the 2012 assessment ranged from 10.2 to 37.4 inches with an average length of 22.2 inches. Scale and cleithrum analysis identified ages 2-7 and 9 in the 2013 sample. Growth for ages 1, 5-9 were similar to the statewide average while ages 2 to 4 exceeded the statewide average. Northern pike averaged 24.2 inches by age 4.
The yellow perch catch of 36.8/gill net was similar to the previous assessment (38.2/gill net) and remained within the interquartile range. Size structure was poor with very few fish exceeding eight inches (PSD-5=8, n=442). Lengths ranged from 5.4 to 9.4 inches with an average of 6.8 inches.
Tullibee were sampled at a rate of 16.9/gill net, exceeding the expected range and the previous assessment (6.6/gill net). Lengths ranged from 7.2 to 15.6 inches with an average length of 12.4 inches.
Black crappie were sampled at a rate of 2.8/trap net, exceeding the expected range and the previous assessment (1.4/trap net). Size structure was favorable with lengths ranging from 5.5 to 12.8 inches and an average length of 9.9 inches.
Bluegill have typically been sampled in low numbers in most assessments. The 2013 trap net catch rate of 7.3/net was within the expected range, yet down from the previous assessment (17.3/net). Size structure was moderate. Lengths ranged from 3.0 to 9.1 inches with an average length of 6.2 inches.
Other species sampled included bowfin, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, and white sucker.
As part of IBI (Index of Biotic Integrity) near shore sampling conducted in mid-July 2013, Iowa darter, Johnny darter, banded killifish, blackchin shiner, blacknose shiner, bluegill, bluntnose minnow, common shiner, golden shiner, largemouth bass, mimic shiner, muskellunge, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, spottail shiner, tadpole madtom, white sucker, and yellow perch were sampled in fifteen seine hauls. Backpack electrofishing sampled Iowa darter, Johnny darter, banded killifish, blackchin shiner, bluntnose minnow, central mudminnow, largemouth bass, longear sunfish, mottled sculpin, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, smallmouth bass, tadpole madtom, white sucker, and yellow perch in 18 stations.

Great smaller lake with lots of structure, map & depth finder strongly suggested. Very good musky population and a few but very large pike. Good choice if looking for that first ski.
