History & Status of the Fishery

Island Lake is a 283 acre lake located 7 miles north of Deer River, MN in the Mississippi River watershed. The lake has 183 littoral acres and a maximum depth of 31 feet. Island Lake is in ecological lake class 34. Other area lakes in this class include Dixon and Dunbar Lakes.

The Northern Pike gill-net catch was 7.0/net, which is within the normal range for this lake class and typical for Island Lake. Size structure was modest; sampled pike varied from 14.6 to 31.5 inches, with a mean length of 22.4 inches. Ages 2-6 were represented in the sample and growth was fairly good. Northern pike averaged over 23 inches at age 4.

Gill-net catches for Yellow Perch have exceeded the lake class normal range in every assessment on Island Lake. The 2014 catch rate of 43.8/net was fairly typical for the lake. Sampled perch ranged from 5.2 to 8.6 inches with a mean length of 6.4 inches. Ages 3-7 were represented, with age 3-4 fish making up the majority of the sample. Growth was similar to the statewide average, with perch approaching 7 inches at age 4.

The gill-net catch for Black Crappie exceeded the lake class normal range at 9.7/net. This is a substantially higher catch rate than in any previous survey. Sampled crappie varied from 4.7 to 11.6 inches with a mean length of 7.8 inches. A variety of year classes (ages 2-7) were identified, but age 2-4 fish made up 76% of the sample. Growth of Black Crappie was similar to the lake class average with fish exceeding 8 inches at age 4.

The trap-net catch rate for Bluegill of 10.4/net was higher than previous surveys but still below the median for this lake class. Bluegill size structure was good with fish ranging from 7.3 to 9.5 inches with a mean length of 8.2 inches. A special spring trap-net assessment for Bluegill was also conducted in 2014. A night electrofishing assessment for Largemouth Bass was conducted in the spring of 2014. Only six bass were captured indicating a low density population. The sampled fish were all of quality size averaging 17.8 inches and 3.5 pounds.

Four Walleye were captured in the 2014 survey for a catch rate of 0.7/gill net, below the normal range for this lake class. Catches of Walleye have never exceeded 2.0/net in any assessment on Island Lake. Sampled Walleye averaged 22.3 inches and all were older than age 7. While younger Walleye were not sampled in test nets, a variety of smaller sized fish were observed during the spring night electrofishing assessment.

Other species sampled in this survey included Hybrid Sunfish, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Bowfin, Brown Bullhead and Yellow Bullhead.

I was always told it is a crappie lake and it is a great one. But you can get pike, bluegill, perch, walleye and bass to go with your limit of great crappie! Very strong lake
