History & Status of the Fishery

Blackwater Lake is a 674-acre impoundment on the Mississippi River at Cohasset, MN. The Pokegama Dam, operated by the Corps of Engineers, controls the water level of the lake. The lake is broadly connected to Jay Gould Lake to the east, and is considered part of the Pokegama Reservoir system. The Minnesota Power and Light Clay-Boswell electrical generating plant draws water from the lake for cooling purposes and discharges heated water into Jay Gould Bay. The area of the warm water discharge stays ice-free during the winter months. The discharge bay also attracts fish and is a popular spot for anglers, especially during the cooler months. Blackwater Lake is essentially a flooded river channel with several feet of water covering much of the adjacent lowland and backwater habitat. Aquatic vegetation is very abundant, with open water confined to the area of the river channel, the intake bay and discharge bay. The mixture of river and shallow lake habitat supports a wide variety of species, and is particularly well suited to largemouth bass and panfish.Largemouth bass in the most recent assessment were fairly abundant and had a good average size. Night electrofishing for largemouth bass was conducted in spring 2003, capturing 45.5 fish/hour of on-time. Bass from the electrofishing sample had an average length of 13.7 inches and an average weight of 1.8 pounds. Growth rates for largemouth bass were above average. The gill-net catch rate for northern pike was fairly low and similar to the previous assessment at 1.25/net. Northern pike size structure was poor; northern pike from gill nets had an average length of 19.0 inches and an average weight of 1.4 pounds. Growth rates were similar to the statewide average for all ages. Bowfin appeared to be a more abundant predator, with catch rates of 2.2/gill net and 3.4/trap net. Bowfin from gill nets had a mean weight of 5.4 lbs.The trap-net catch rate for bluegill was up from the previous assessment, but still relatively low at 8.8/net. Bluegill size structure was good. Bluegill from trap nets ranged from 3.3 to 10.2 inches, with an average length of 6.9 inches. Growth rates for bluegill were above the statewide average for all ages.Yellow perch numbers were moderate and similar to the last assessment at 7.4/gill net. Average size was modest at 7.1 inches , but some fish over 10 inches were sampled. Net catches for black crappie were low, but may not be representative of actual abundance since mid-summer test-netting often does not sample crappie well. The gill net catch for walleye was low and similar to the previous assessment at 0.25/net.Other species sampled include: pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, shorthead redhorse, white sucker, and black, brown and yellow bullhead.
