History & Status of the Fishery
Alice Lake is a 37 acre lake located just south of Round Lake near Squaw Lake, MN. It is located in the Chippewa National Forest and the Leech Lake Indian Reservation. The lake has a maximum depth of 65 feet and a littoral area of 11 acres. The water is relatively clear with a slight bog stain. A Secchi disc reading of 8.5 feet was recorded in this assessment. The only access to the lake is the outlet to Round Lake. The northern pike gill net catch rate was 5.0/set in this assessment, above the lake class median. Six year classes were represented in the catch. Size structure was poor with a PSD of 47 and an RSD-P (28 inches) of 0. The northern pike sampled varied in length from 16.1 to 25.3 inches and had a mean length of 20.3 inches. Growth was slower than the statewide averages. Yellow perch, typically low in this lake class, were sampled at 1.0/gill net, below the 1st quartile. The three perch sampled were small, averaging 5.9 inches. The bluegill trap net catch rate was 14.1/set below the median. Size structure was poor with a PSD of 23 and RSD-P of 1. The bluegill sampled ranged in length from 3.3 to 9.2 inches and had a mean length of 5.4 inches. The black crappie catch rate was low in both gill nets and trap nets. They were sampled in the both gear types at 0.7/set. The crappie ranged in length in the trap nets from 6.3 to 8.9 inches and had a mean length of 8.2 inches. The two in the gill nets were 7.2 and 11.3 inches. Growth was similar to the statewide averages. Tullibee were sampled in Alice for the first time. Although this species is seldom found in small lakes, adequate temperature/oxygen exists, although marginal in late summer. The lake is connected to Round Lake which has an excellent tullibee population. They were sampled in this assessment at 3.0/gill net and ranged in length from 8.5 to 9.7 inches. Largemouth bass were sampled in this assessment at 1.7/gill net and 0.8/trapnet. Those sampled in the gill net ranged in length from 12.3 to 13.6 inches while those in the trap nets ranged from 4.8 to 6.5 inches. Spring electrofishing has been shown to more effectively sample bass than conventional test netting, however this was not done during this assessment. Growth was similar to the statewide averages. Other species sampled in this assessment were black, brown and yellow bullhead, bowfin, pumpkinseed sunfish, white sucker.
