What aquatic invasive species are found in Mantrap Lake?
There are some aquatic invasive species found in Mantrap Lake including Eurasian watermilfoil.

Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

Mantrap Lake is a 1,618 acre lake located near Emmaville, MN that has over 26 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 68 feet. There are two Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) public accesses, one is located on the south side of the west basin and the other one is located on the south end of the north Arm. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Mantrap Lake is in Lake Class 25; lakes in this class are deep, clear, and irregularly shaped lakes. Other Lake Class 25 lakes in the Park Rapids area are Belle Taine, Little Mantrap, and Spider Lakes.

Big Mantrap is known as an excellent muskellunge lake. Big Mantrap is stocked with Leech lake strain of muskellunge during even-numbered years with 750 fingerlings, which has resulted in a shift of larger sizes of muskellunge. No sampling was conducted in 2012 to target muskellunge; however, special sampling will be done in 2013.

Big Mantrap supports an excellent northern pike fishery. Currently, there is a special length limit for northern pike which means all northern pike between 24 to 36 inches have to be released. This regulation was implemented in 2003. The average length of fish sampled was 24 inches but fish up to 35 inches were caught.

The black crappie population seems to be abundant in Big Mantrap; however, the size consists of smaller fish. In 2006, a special regulation (minimum size of 10 inches and bag limit of 5) was implemented to see if the size structure can be shifted to larger fish. It is still early to see if the size structure has responded to this special regulation.

People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Selective harvest by anglers (harvest of smaller to medium-sized fish) promotes balanced fish communities and sustainable fishing quality. Removal of shoreline vegetation on private lake lots and mowing grass to the water's edge can reduce water quality, which in turn can adversely affect fish populations. Similarly, removal of woody debris and aquatic plants from near-shore areas reduces critical habitat needed to support quality fish populations.

No aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Big Mantrap Lake, but the banded mystery snail are present which is an exotic. Aquatic invasive species are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake-shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat away before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office. Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the DNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us/).
