History & Status of the Fishery

Kabekona Lake is located three miles south of Laporte in northeastern Hubbard County. Kabekona has a surface area of 2,433 acres and a maximum depth of 133 feet. A county-owned public access is located on the west shore of the lake. The access is shallow and sandy which might be difficult for larger boats. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical, chemical, and other characteristics. Kabekona is in lake class 22. Class 22 lakes are generally very large, very deep, clear, and hard water lakes, with very irregularly shaped shoreline and low littoral zone. Other class 22 lakes in the Park Rapids area include: Lower Bottle, Long, Potato, and Big Sand.

Kabekona has excellent walleye spawning habitat of large wind-swept rubble areas as well as inlet and outlet stream areas. A protected slot length limit for Walleye is currently in place on Kabekona that requires the release of all Walleye between 18 and 26 inches with one Walleye over 26 inches allowed. The possession limit for Walleye on Kabekona is four. This 18 to 26 protected slot length limit for Walleye should help protect spawning size fish in Kabekona. It is hoped that if walleye abundance is increased that natural reproduction may contribute significantly to the walleye population in Kabekona Lake which is starting to be evidenced since the slot limit was implemented. Walleye abundance in 2014 was the highest ever recorded. Multiple year-classes of Walleye were sampled with a lot fish in the 12 16 inch range. The average size was 17.8 inches and fish up to 28.9 inches were sampled.

Other species sampled include Black Crappie, Bluegill, Bowfin, Brook Trout, Brown Bullhead, Burbot, Lake Whitefish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Tullibee, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Perch.

Currently no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Kabekona. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access.
