What aquatic invasive species are found in Lake George?

Lake George is located in north-central Hubbard County, just south of the town of Lake George. Lake George has a surface area of 852 acres and a maximum depth of 29 feet. A state-owned public access with a concrete ramp is located on the northwest shore of the lake, just off County Road 4.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical and chemical characteristics. Lake George is in lake class 27. Other area lakes in this same classification include Garfield, Fish Hook, and Upper Bottle.

Lake George is a popular fishing lake and supports good populations of Walleye, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Panfish. Lake George has good water quality and excellent fish habitat of submerged and emergent vegetation such as hardstem bulrush.

Walleye abundance (7.0 Walleye/gill net) was up from recent surveys, but below the management goal of 11.0 Walleye/gill net. Sampled walleye had an average length and weight of 14.8 inches and 1.4 pounds, with fish measured up to 27.5 inches. The Walleye population in Lake George is being maintained by a combination of fingerling stocking by the DNR along with some limited natural reproduction. Yellow Perch, an important forage species for Walleye, were sampled in moderate numbers, typical for this lake class. Yellow Perch are generally small in size, with few fish an acceptable size for angling. Tullibee (Cisco) are also present in low numbers, and provide an additional forage species for walleye and northern pike.

Lake George supports an abundant Northern Pike population. Northern pike were sampled in high numbers, similar to past surveys. Sampled Northern Pike had an average length and weight of 23.5 inches and 3.0 pounds, with fish measured up to 35.9 inches. A special length limit regulation for Northern Pike was implemented in the spring of 2003. This regulation requires the release of all northern pike between 24.0 and 36.0 inches (24 to 36 inch protected slot), with only one Northern Pike allowed over 36.0 inches allowed in possession limit of three. The goal of this regulation is to improve the size structure of the Northern Pike population and to increase the proportion of large Northern Pike in the lake. The proportion of large size Northern Pike (greater than 28.0 inches) has increased slowly in Lake George since the implementation of the protected slot length limit.

Lake George supports an abundant Largemouth Bass population. Anglers will find good numbers of bass in the 12-14 inch size range. Bigger bass are present in Lake George, but the numbers of larger bass (> 15.0 inches) was low compared to other area lakes. A special length limit regulation for largemouth bass will be implemented in the spring of 2015. This regulation requires the release of all bass between 14.0 and 20.0 inches in length, with only one bass over 20.0 inches in length allowed in the possession limit of six (14 to 20 inch protected slot). The goal of this regulation is to improve the numbers of larger bass (> 15.0 inches). This slot length limit regulation was proposed after strong public support by local anglers. Good water quality, aquatic vegetation cover, and spawning substrate provide excellent habitat for Largemouth Bass in Lake George.

Lake George supports a popular Panfish fishery composed of Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, and Black Crappie. Anglers will find good numbers of Bluegill and Pumpkinseed in the 6-8 inch size range. Black Crappie were sampled in moderate numbers, within the range typical for this lake class. Past surveys have shown that black crappie abundance has fluctuated from low to moderate numbers.

Other species sampled included high numbers of Yellow Bullhead and moderate numbers of White Sucker, Rock Bass, and Hybrid Sunfish. Black Bullhead and Green Sunfish were sampled in low numbers.

Currently no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Lake George. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access.
