History & Status of the Fishery
Crappie Lake is located five miles southeast of Lake George in central Hubbard County. Crappie Lake has a surface area of 23 acres, a shoreline length of 0.85 miles, and a maximum depth of 73 feet. Hiking and canoe portage trails are the only access to the lake because the lake is located in an area of no motorized vehicles allowed. Crappie Lake is one of three lakes in the Park Rapids Management Area that is designated as a stream trout lake, specifically managed for Rainbow Trout only, and stocked each fall with Rainbow Trout fingerlings. The other two lakes are Blacksmith and Newman Lakes.
Abundance of Rainbow Trout in Crappie Lake in 2016 was higher than most other years, but was lower compared to the two other trout lakes in the Park Rapids management area. Rainbow Trout from the 2015 stockings ranged from 8.5 to 12 inches and Rainbow Trout from the 2013 and 2014 stockings ranged from 13 to 17 inches. Currently, two different strains of Rainbow Trout are being evaluated in Crappie Lake and the DNR would like information about your catch (i.e., size and presence of adipose fin). There is a sign with additional information along the walking trail.
