But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.
History & Status of the Fishery
White Sand Lake is a 368 acre lake that lies within the city of Baxter, Minnesota. The lake is highly developed and water levels fluctuate widely with groundwater levels. Water clarity is good with a secchi disk reading of 10 feet in 2013. The lake's once dense hardstem bulrush fringe has been significantly reduced due to removal by lakeshore owners, typically during low water years. Protection of aquatic vegetation, especially emergent vegetation, is important for maintaining good water quality. Vegetation also provides spawning habitat and cover for fish. The lake has an extensive shoal area with little fishing structure, but still provides good fishing opportunities.
Largemouth bass were sampled by spring electrofishing at a rate of 67.2/hr. run-time. Average length was 13.3 inches with a maximum length of 19.1 inches. The northern pike gillnet catch of 12.2/net was above average. Average size was 19.7 inches and 1.9 lbs. Fish at least 24 inches long accounted for 18% of the catch. Two and three year old fish (2010 and 2011 year classes) made up 57% of the catch. These fish were between 14 and 23 inches.
White Sand is stocked with walleye fingerlings every other year. These stockings appear to be providing anglers with an occasional walleye catch. The walleye gillnet catch of 1.2/net was average when compared with similar lakes. Average size was 18.3 inches and 2.4 lbs, with walleyes up to 22 inches captured. Walleye 15 inches or longer accounted for 64% of the catch and 55% were 20 inches or longer.
Black crappies had a gillnet catch of 8.7/net and a trap net catch of 2.2/net. Past gillnet catches have ranged from 0.2/net (1985) to 16.3/net (1956). Average length was 6.7 inches with a maximum length of 11.9 inches. For both gillnets and trap nets combined, 27% of the black crappies were at least 8 inches.
Catch rates for bluegill, rock bass, and yellow bullhead were average in 2013 compared to similar lakes, and catches of yellow perch, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, and bowfin (dogfish) were relatively low. Research has shown that large, nest protecting, bluegill are important to the fish community but are especially vulnerable to angler harvest. Please consider releasing them.
