What aquatic invasive species are found in Upper Mission Lake?
Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.
History & Status of the Fishery
Walleye fingerlings have been stocked on a regular basis into Upper Mission since 1999. The current rate is 512 pounds in odd numbered years. The 2014 gill net catch was low for this type of lake (2.6/net), but on par with past catches. Average length was 16.4" and 93% of the fish were 12" or larger. The 2011 year class accounted for 73% of the catch. A fair number of these fish also showed up in our spring bass electrofishing catch (33.3/hr). Walleyes sampled by electrofishing had an average length of 14.7".
The northern pike catch was the highest to date at 14.7/net, although our goal is to maintain this below 5/net. Average length was decent at 24.1" and 41% of the fish were 24" or larger. The largest fish measured 37.9". A special regulation on Upper and Lower Mission requires all northern pike from 24-36" to be immediately released. One over 36" is allowed in possession.
Panfish size was small, with average lengths for black crappie at 8.2" and bluegill at 5.3". Numbers were also low in our nets for crappies at 0.8/trap net. Bluegill numbers were a little better at 24.5/trap net.
