What aquatic invasive species are found in Roy Lake?
Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.
History & Status of the Fishery
Due to its difficultly to access, low numbers of walleye, and small northern pike, fishing on Roy Lake is not as popular as on other waters. Only one walleye was caught in the 2013 survey and northern pike had an average length of 19.1", with only 7% measuring 24" or larger. However, some decent panfishing opportunities exist if you navigate there through the channels from Gull.
While neither species had many large fish, both black crappie and bluegill had average net catches and plenty large enough to keep. Black crappie were caught at the rate of 2.3/net and the average size was 8.9", with 90% of the fish measuring 8" or larger. The largest was 10.8". Bluegill numbers were the lowest to date at 14.6/net, but still average for this type of lake. Average length was 7" and 51% were 7" or larger.
Roy Lake is designated as AIS (aquatic invasive species) infested waters because of zebra mussels in Gull Lake. Lake users should inspect and remove any aquatic plants and animals from their watercraft and trailers as well as pull the plug and drain all water from the watercraft, including bilges, livewells and baitwells.
