History & Status of the Fishery
Rice Lake is a 434-acre reservoir located on the northeast side of Brainerd in Crow Wing County. The reservoirs dam is 0.5 miles downstream from the state highway 25 (Mill Avenue) bridge. A public access is located on the south side of Rice Lake, in Lum Park. Rice lake has a maximum depth of 25 feet and 47% of the lake is 15 feet deep or less. Two exotic species have been confirmed to be present. The aquatic plant curly-leaf pondweed has been present for many years, and zebra mussels were found in 2005. In 2007 zebra mussels were extremely abundant, and were located in all areas of the lake. Lake users should take extreme precaution and clean and drain all boat livewells and any item (minnow buckets etc.) that will be transported off the lake. The potential to transport these species to other waters is greater. The northern pike catch rate of 4.33/gill net is within range of the previous five surveys of 0.33/gill net (1985) to 6.56/gill net (2004). Size ranged from 18.0 to 31.4 inches, with an average of 23.0 inches. A total of 31% were 24.0 inches or greater. Age classes one thru six were present. Growth rate was good. The 2004 survey, along with the 2007 survey were the best ever for size and number on this lake. The river systems smallmouth population continues to grow; in Rice Lake proper the catch rate of 2.22/gill net was an all-time high for this lake. Size ranged from 6.4 to 19.0 inches. A total of 45 % were 12.0 inches or greater. The walleye catch rate of 3.89/gill net is an all-time high for this lake. Past surveys ranged from 1.17/gill net (1985) to 2.92/gill net (1967). Sizes ranged from 7.8 to 25.5 inches and averaged 13.9 inches. Age classes one thru eight were present. These are all naturally reproducing fish. Black crappie catch rate of 10.78/gill net is higher than previous nettings. Sizes ranged from 4.5 to 10.4 inches with an average of 6.4 inches. A total of 16% were 8.0 inches or greater. Age classes one and two dominated the catch. Bluegill was present in moderate numbers and ranged in size from 4.6 to 9.4 inches. A total of 67% were 7.0 inches or greater. Three channel catfish were captured in 2007. They ranged in size from 18.4 to 23.1 inches. This was the first confirmation of this species being present above the Brainerd dam.
