But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

Pig Lake is 191 acres in size and is part of the Whitefish chain of lakes in northern Crow Wing County. The lake may be accessed via the channel from Whitefish Lake. Pig has a maximum depth of 56 feet with 39% of the lake 15 feet or less. There is heavy development on the lake, which includes 62 homes and 1 resort along 2.2 miles of shoreline.

Walleyes, although not stocked directly into the lake, are present because of the connection to Whitefish Lake which is stocked with fry and fingerlings. The walleye catch rate of 3.0/gill net was above average in 2011 when compared to similar lakes. The catch rate is also the highest observed on Pig Lake compared to previous surveys. The average size of these fish was large, an impressive 23.1" and 4.7 lbs. All of the walleyes sampled were 14" or larger, including the largest which was 29".

Largemouth bass were sampled at a rate of 0.7/gill net which is slightly below average. The average size of these fish was 10.8" and 0.7 lbs. Because standard survey nets don't sample largemouth bass effectively, electrofishing was conducted on Whitefish Lake where the catch rate was 112.5/hr. The average size was slightly larger than Pig at 12.8" and 1.3 lbs. Fish up to 18.7" were sampled during electrofishing. Given the connection of the lakes it can be assumed that these fish have the ability to move between them.

The northern pike catch rate of 11.8/gill net was well above average for similar lakes. The average size of the northern pike was 19.0" and 1.6 lbs., with only 7% being 24" or larger. Fish up to 32" were observed in the survey. The presence of tullibee (cisco), which is an important forage fish, may allow for larger fish to exist. The catch rate for tullibee (cisco) was 10.3/gill net which is well above average when compared to similar lakes.

Pig's bluegill population is near average with 19.1 fish per trap net. The average length was only 5.9", and only 9% of the fish were 7" or larger. The black crappie numbers were below normal with an average length of 7.4".

Some other fish species sampled during the survey included black bullhead, bowfin, brown bullhead, greater redhorse, hybrid sunfish, lake whitefish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, silver redhorse, shorthead redhorse, white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.
