History & Status of the Fishery
Northern pike was one of the most abundant species caught in Lower Mission at 17.0/gill net. They had an average length of 22.5" and 28% of the fish were 24" or larger. The largest fish measured 35". A special regulation on Upper and Lower Mission requires all northern pike from 24-36" to be immediately released. One over 36" is allowed in possession.
Largemouth bass numbers were down in our electrofishing count (26/hr), but size was good, with an average length of 14.9" and 83% measuring 13" or larger. Panfish numbers were average, with black crappie offering the better size at an average length of 10.9". Bluegill sizes were smaller with an average length of 5" and only 18% measured 7" or larger.
Walleyes are not stocked directly into Lower Mission, but are stocked as fingerlings in Upper Mission in odd numbered years. The catch rate was average for this type of lake, although the population is dominated by older fish. All of the fish were over 17", with an average length of 22.2".
