History & Status of the Fishery
Walleye fingerlings are currently stocked in odd numbered years into Lower South Long Lake. Walleye numbers looked good in 2013 (6.5/net) and so did the average size of 17.1". Most of the fish (83%) were 12" or longer. Northern pike numbers were respectable at 7.5/net with an average length of 21.6".
The bass population was lower than last time while night electrofishing. However, with a rate of 65.4/hr it still seems plenty healthy. Size was nice, with an average length of 13.1" and 70% measuring 12" or longer. The largest fish measured 19.8".
Average numbers of bluegill and black crappies were caught, but size appeared to be small. The average size bluegill was only 5.2" and 37% of the black crappies were 8" or larger.
Yellow perch are an important forage species and they were at their lowest numbers ever at 1.9/net. Average length was 6.1"
