History & Status of the Fishery
Island and Loon are two separate lakes that are surveyed as one lake totaling 232 acres. They are part of the Whitefish chain of lakes located in northern Crow Wing County near Crosslake, MN. Development is heavy, with 92 homes/cabins and one resort being counted along 5.2 miles of shoreline during the 1995 survey. Walleyes have not been stocked into Island-Loon since 1967. It is connected to Whitefish Lake, which is stocked with both fry and fingerlings. The walleye catch rate (0.7/gill net) was below average in 2005 when compared to similar lakes. Average size was 24.5" and 6.2 lbs. All of the fish were over 12". The northern pike catch rate was average (7.2/gill net). Average size was 22.5" and 2.8 lbs., with 35% of the fish being 24" or larger. Largemouth bass were caught in average numbers in trap nets (0.8/net). Average length was 11.9" and 50% of the fish were 12" or larger. Only one largemouth bass was captured in gill nets. The black crappie catch rate was average in both gill nets (0.5/net) and trap nets (0.7/net). When both gears were combined, 56% of the fish were 8" or larger. The bluegill catch rate was average (17.9/trap net), but the lowest to date. Average length was 6.0" and 27% were 7" or larger. The lake whitefish catch rate was average (2.2/gill net). Average size was 11.1" and 0.5 lbs. Other fish species captured included bowfin (dogfish), green sunfish, hybrid sunfish, longear sunfish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, tullibee (cisco), white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.
