But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

Hubert Lake is a 1,287 acre lake with a maximum depth of 83 feet located just southeast of the town of Nisswa in west-central Crow Wing County. Hubert is one of the few lakes in the area that have smallmouth bass available for anglers to catch. In 2005, a 12" maximum (fish larger than 12" must be immediately released) regulation on largemouth and smallmouth bass was put in place to try and maintain and enhance bass populations. Based on survey results, this regulation appears to be doing what it intended. During night electrofishing on June 3, 2013, smallmouth bass were captured at rate of 12/hr while largemouth bass were captured at 118/hr. The average size was for smallmouth was an impressive 15.4" while the largest fish during the survey topped out at 20.9". Largemouth bass average size was 13.3" with the biggest largemouth in the survey measuring 18.3".

Another species that may catch the attention of anglers to Hubert are walleyes. Walleyes are stocked every third year, which appears to be working very favorably in creating a decent walleye fishery. Walleyes were sampled at a rate of 9.2 per gill net, which is above average for lakes similar to Hubert. They also had a nice average length of 16.8" with fish up to 28" measured. Nearly 91 percent of these fish were from stocked years. Walleyes also exhibited good growth when compared to other lakes in the area.

Northern pike are available in modest numbers, sampling at a rate of 7.1 per gill net. This is slightly below average for lakes similar to Hubert. Average size was 21.7" with fish up to 32.3" caught. Almost 25 percent of these fish were 24" or greater. Anglers are encouraged to release northern pike over 24" and keep the smaller northern pike to maintain a balanced northern pike population and put less pressure on the forage base in the lake, allowing continued survival of walleye fingerlings that are stocked.

Black crappies are also available to anglers of Hubert. They were sampled at a rate of 1.3 per gill net with an average size of 10.9" with the largest being 13.8". Of the black crappies sampled, 80 percent were 8" or larger. The growth of these fish was also above average for lakes in the area.

Bluegills were sampled at a rate of 13.3 per trap net, a little below normal for lakes like Hubert. The average size was 5.9" and largest at 8.5". Nearly 56 percent were 6" or larger.

Some other species sampled during the survey include black bullhead, brown bullhead, common carp, hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, tullibee, white sucker, yellow bullhead, and yellow perch.
