History & Status of the Fishery
Fawn Lake is a 60 acre lake in west-central Crow Wing County, just north of the city of Nisswa. It has a maximum depth of 40 feet. There is no public access directly on the lake, but access may be gained via channel that connects to Edna Lake. Northern pike is the primary management species. A standard survey was conducted the week of June 15, 2015.
The northern pike catch rate for this survey was 11.5/ gill net, which is above average for lakes similar to Fawn. The average size of these fish was 23.4" with fish up to 31.9" measured. Nearly 48 percent were 24" or longer. In order to improve and maintain the northern pike population, anglers are encouraged to harvest smaller northern pike and release the larger ones.
Bluegill catch rate was 44.3/trap net, which is above average for lakes like Fawn. The average size was 5.9" with the largest bluegill sampled measuring 7.8". Only about 15 percent were 7" or larger.
Black crappie may be an option for anglers as well. The catch rate was 1.7/trap net. This is slightly more than the average for similar lakes. The average length was 8.5" and the largest was 9.4".
Largemouth bass are also available to anglers of Fawn Lake. Typically largemouth bass don't sample well with gill nets and trap nets and only 3 were sampled in this survey. Anecdotal reports from anglers suggest that there are quality sized largemouth bass in Fawn Lake.
There were 2 walleyes that were also sampled in this survey. Although walleyes are not stocked directly into Fawn, they most likely entered the lake via channel from Edna Lake. Edna receives walleye fingerlings every third year.
Other fish species sampled include hybrid sunfish, pumpkinseed, rock bass, and yellow bullhead.
