History & Status of the Fishery

WALLEYE RE PRESENT IN LOW NUMBERS. AVERAGE SIZE IS GOOD, WITH MOST FISH OVER 16 INCHES IN LENGTH. WALLEYE GROWTH RATES ARE ABOUT AVERAGE COMPARED TO STATE STANDARDS. SEVERAL YEAR-CLASSES ARE PRESENT, BUT NONE ARE EXCEPTIONALLY STRONG. WALLEYE ABUNDANCE, SIZE AND GROWTH ARE SIMILAR TO THAT FOUND IN 1981 AND 1984. NORTHERN PIKE ARE ALSO PRESENT IN LOW NUMBERS, AND THEIR AVERAGE SIZE IS SMALL. GROWTH RATES ARE AVERAGE. YEAR-CLASS REPRESENTATION APPEARS RELATIVELY UNCHANGED SINCE 1971, BUT GROWTH RATES SEEM TO HAVE IMPROVED SINCE 1984. COMPARISON OF BACK-CALCULATED LENGTHS: FOR THE 1982 YEAR-CLASS, DONE IN 1984 AND 1987, SHOWS SOME DISCREPANCY WHICH MAY BE THE RESULT OF POOR AGING TECHNIQUE IN ONE OF THOSE YEARS. YELLOW PERCH AND BURBOT WERE NOT RECOVERED DURING THIS ASSESSMENT BUT ARE PROBABLY PRESENT IN LOW NUMBERS. FORAGE SPECIES APPEAR TO BE VERY LIMITED.
