History & Status of the Fishery

This survey used gill net sets stratified by depth. The combined catch in the deep and shallow sets is most comparable to historic catches in this lake and to catches in other lakes in the lake class. The combined catch in deep and shallow gill nets (total of nine sets) in Red Rock Lake in 1998 was:Burbot 0.67 fish/set, mean weight 1.15 lb/fishLake trout 0.11 fish/set, mean weight 0.11 lb/fishLake whitefish 0.56 fish/set, mean weight 4.47 lb/fishNorthern pike 3.00 fish/net, mean weight 3.00 lb/fishSmallmouth bass 0.44 fish/net, mean weight 1.46 lb/fishNorthern cisco 5.00 fish/net, mean weight 0.79 lb/fishWalleye 1.33 fish/net, mean weight 1.34 lb/fishWhite sucker 0.33 fish/net, mean weight 2.05 lb/fishWalleye abundance appeared to have been fairly low; although natural reproduction had been steady, no exceptionally strong year classes had been produced. Walleye growth was fast. Northern pike abundance was high, and good numbers of large fish were present. Northern pike growth was also fast, no doubt due to the presence of a good coregonid forage base. Smallmouth bass abundance appeared to have been low, although the fish were fast-growing and some large fish were present.Lake trout were collected for the first time in this lake, probably as a result of reintroductory stocking begun in 1998. Rainbow smelt were also collected for the first time, in small-mesh gill net sets. Rainbow smelt have probably been present for many years, but were too small to be taken in standard survey gill nets.
