History & Status of the Fishery
Lake trout were abundant in Partridge Lake in 2013. As has typically been the case in this lake, all of the lake trout taken were under 20 inches in length. The lake trout gill net catch in 2013 was similar to other catches seen in this lake since 1986, and exceeded the normal range for a lake of this type. Because few small (under 12 inch) lake trout were collected, the mean weight for lake trout collected in 2013 was the second highest ever observed in this lake, following a trend towards higher mean weights observed in the lake since 1975. Several year classes, all naturally produced, contributed to the catch. Young lake trout are often only lightly sampled in standard survey gear, so the lack of young fish in the 2013 catch did not necessarily indicate a recruiment failure. Recruitment is probably adequate, given the many reasonably strong year classes observed in the 2013 catch.
Lake trout in Partridge Lake probably subsist an a largely invertebrate diet. As a result, their potential to reach large sizes is limited. Size and age distributions of lake trout taken in this assessment were typical for lake trout lakes of this type in this area with simple fish communities, no warmwater game fish, and no coldwater forage fish. Growth of lake trout collected in 2013 had been relatively slow. Six-year-old fish reached an average length of 15.1 inches by the end of their sixth year, compared to an average of 17.7 inches for similar lakes in this area.
No species new to this lake were collected in 2013. The white sucker gill net catch remained low, compared to catches observed in this lake in the 1970s, while the green sunfish catch remained high, and was similar to the high catch observed in the 2004 assessment. Both species were likely native to this lake.
