History & Status of the Fishery
This assessment used a combination of deep and shallow gill net sets. The combined catch in those sets is most comparable to historic catches in this lake, and to lake class medians. Combined catches in 1998 (in 12 gill net sets) were as follows:Species Number/net Mean weight (lb) Common lengths Burbot 2.42 1.25 13 - 22 inLake trout 0.33 4.57 21 - 27 inLake whitefish 2.33 2.93 17 - 22 inSmallmouth bass 0.33 1.37 16 inNorthern cisco 4.08 0.21 7 - 10 inWalleye 6.75 2.03 16 - 20 inWhite sucker 4.67 2.95 17 - 22 inYellow perch 0.08 0.16 7 inThe lake trout catch was low for lakes of this class, and for this lake historically. There had been some natural reproduction, but it did not appear that any strong year classes had been produced recently. The walleye catch was within the normal range for lakes of this class, but it was the highest yet observed in this lake. The population was sustained entirely through natural reproduction, with strong year classes produced in 1994 and 1995. Walleye growth had been fast by area standards, probably due to an excellent northern cisco forage base.Smallmouth bass were present, although probably not in high numbers. Smallmouth bass were first collected by the DNR in this lake in 1993.
