History & Status of the Fishery
Based on catches in population assessments, Little Saganaga Lake has a low- to medium-density population of lake trout. The 2011 catch was slightly higher than catches in 1987, 1993, and 1998 (0.42-0.50 fish/net), but remained near the low end of the usual range for this class of lake. The size of lake trout taken in assessments has been small to medium (none have been over 24 inches), but anglers have taken larger fish. Mean weight from the 2011 assessment was within the range of mean weights from previous assessments (1.64-2.52 lb/fish), and in the mid range for this class of lake. Lake trout have not been stocked since 1950, so natural reproduction was responsible for the entire 2011 catch. Several year classes were present. Growth rates appeared to have been about average or slightly slower compared to other lakes in this class. The lake has no high-quality forage fish species that would promote growth to large sizes. Several yellow perch and sculpin were found in lake trout stomachs.
Northern pike catches in Little Saganaga Lake have generally been relatively high for this class of lake. The 2011 catch was slightly higher than previous catches (1.17-1.75 fish/net). Mean weight of northern pike also slightly exceeded values from previous assessments (2.55-3.09 lb/fish). Fish over 30 inches long were sampled in 2011, 1993, and 1987. Natural reproduction appears to have been consistently successfull in the lake, and several year classes contributed to the 2011 catch. Growth rates of northern pike had been close to average for the lake class.
The white sucker catch exceeded previous catches in the lake (2.75-4.17 fish/net) and was somewhat high for the lake class. Sampled white sucker have consistently been small.
The burbot catch was within the range of previous catches (0.08-0.67 fish/net) and within the usual range for the lake class. Mean weight slightly exceeded the previous range (0.65-0.85 lb/fish).
Results of yellow perch sampling in 2011 were consistent with previous results. Population density appears to have been low to medium for this class of lake. A few perch over eight inches long have been taken, but average size has been small. Four yellow perch were identified in the stomachs of three lake trout.
Seven minnow traps were set in deep water to sample sculpin, and collected 13 slimy sculpin. The species is present in many lakes of this class. Three sculpin were also found in the stomach of one lake trout.
