History & Status of the Fishery
Walleye abundance in Elbow Lake in 2004 appeared to have been low compared to past assessments of this lake; however, the average size for walleye taken was higher than usual. Fifty-five percent of the walleye collected in gill nets in 2004 were 15 inches or larger. Elbow Lake has been regularly stocked with walleye fry, but in 2004 it appeared that natural reproduction was also contributing substantially to the walleye population. Growth rates for young walleye had been relatively slow, but older fish had grown faster. Northern pike were present in average numbers in 2004, both compared to similar lakes, and to past years in this lake. The average size for northern pike collected in 2004 (1.8 lb/fish) was low compared to most past assessments of this lake. The northern pike population appeared to have been dominated by two and three-year-old fish, with few older fish present. Growth rates had been fast (for this area). Yellow perch were abundant, and their average size was larger than usually seen in this lake. Twenty-one percent of the yellow perch taken in gill nets were eight inches or larger (up to 12.4 inches). Yellow perch provided most of the forage available for walleye and northern pike in this lake. No other game fish, and no panfish, were taken in Elbow Lake in 2004. Smallmouth bass, bluegill, and pumpkinseed sunfish have been reported from this lake in the past, and all may still be present in very low numbers.
