But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery

Pine Mountain Lake (DOW# 11-0411; Lake Class 22) is a 1,612 acre lake located near Backus, MN. There is a city-owned public access on the east shore. Pine Mountain Lake has 9.44 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 80 feet. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Pine Mountain Lake is in Lake Class 22; lakes in the class are generally clear, large, deep lakes with a low percentage of shallow water area and have very irregularly shaped shorelines with many bays or points.

Pine Mountain Lake is an excellent Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Northern Pike lake in the Walker area. Walleye catch rates were similar to other lakes in the same lake class. Walleye up to 25 inches were sampled with a large number of fish between 15 and 18 inches. In addition a good number of Yellow Perch were present with fish up to 9 inches. Pine Mountain Lake also has a good Northern Pike population with fish of all sizes. Northern Pike up to 36 inches were sampled in addition to many fish from 22 to 26 inches.

Other fish species that anglers can expect to encounter include Black Crappie, Bowfin (Dogfish), Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Perch.

People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. No aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Pine Mountain Lake. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office. Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the DNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Walker Area Fisheries office.

Large bass, crappie, sunfish and rock bass are easy to find at the edge of the heavy weeds. Small northern pike are abundant, but larger ones are present. We had several panfish stolen by big pike. We caught one walleye but really didn't spent much time fishing for them. Only the perch seemed to be sparse and small. There is abundant deeper structure for walleye fishing. There is a good public access in Backus.
