What aquatic invasive species are found in Margaret Lake (Kilpatrick)?

Join us in the fight to prevent the spread of invasive species These sneaky creatures can hitch a ride on boats, clinging onto propellers, anchor lines, and trailers. They can even survive in hidden places like bilge water and ballast tanks, or disguise themselves in dirt and sand that sticks to nets, buckets, anchors, and waders. But don't worry, we have the power to stop them in their tracks with just a few simple steps. So let's do our part and protect our waters from these unwanted invaders.

History & Status of the Fishery
Margaret Lake is a 222 acre lake located on the Gull Chain of Lakes about 4 miles southwest of Nisswa. Public access is via a navigable channel from Gull Lake. The lake is heavily developed with 23.2 homes/cabins per shoreline mile based on 1996 data. The maximum depth is 26 feet and 29 percent of the lake is 15 deep or less. Shallow water substrates consist primarily of sand and gravel, although areas of muck are also present in marshy areas. Water clarity is below average for the area. The aquatic plant community is moderately diverse with 26 species present and is critical to maintaining healthy fish populations. Emergent plants such as water lillies are common along much of the shoreline. It is essential to protect and maintain these plants as they are important for shoreline protection, maintaining water quality, and they provide critical habitat for bass and panfish species. Submerged plants provide food and cover needed by fish and other aquatic species. Northern pike were caught in the highest numbers to date in 2007 at 9.7 per gill net. Average length and weight were above average at 24.1inches and 3.3 lbs. Growth was good with 45 percent of these fish measuring at least 24 inches. The 2003 and 2004 year classes were most abundant, representing 47 percent of the catch and measuring approximately 16 to 23 inches. The walleye catch of 1.0 per gill net is typical for this lake. The population that exists likely results from migration from Gull Lake with some limited spawning habitat in Home Brook. Though not particularly abundant, average length and weight were good at 22 inches and 3.9 lbs. The 2007 bluegill catch of 30.2 per trap net is typical of past catches on this and similar lakes. Black crappies were present in good numbers at 4.2 per gill net and 2.3 per trap net. Tullibee and yellow perch are important forage species for the lakes game fish. This is the second consecutive netting where no tullibee were sampled. Past catches have ranged up to 2.5 per gill net. Yellow perch abundance has varied from 6.3 to 19.8 per gill net. The 2007 catch was below average for the lake, likely due in part to higher numbers of northern pike.
