History & Status of the Fishery
Lower Trelipe Lake (DOW # 11-0129, Lake Class 31) is a 618-acre lake located about six miles east of Longville, MN. The lake is managed primarily for Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Walleye, and secondarily for Tullibee (Cisco), Black Crappie, Bluegill, and Yellow Perch. The DNR has classified Minnesota lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Lower Trelipe Lake is in Lake Class 31; lakes in this class are generally clear and productive, with moderate depth.
Northern Pike numbers in Lower Trelipe Lake are similar to other lakes in this class. The average length of Northern Pike sampled in this lake by DNR in 2014 was 20 inches, and fish up to 27 inches were present. Walleye had average abundance compared to other lakes in this class. Sampled Walleye ranged from 10 to 23 inches, with an average length of 17 inches. Bluegill abundance was lower than in most lakes in this class, and Bluegill up to 10 inches were sampled. Black Crappie numbers compared favorably to other waters in Lake Class 31 with a wide variety of sizes. Other fish species collected during the 2014 sampling include Bowfin (Dogfish), Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Perch
People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. Currently no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Lower Trelipe Lake. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office.
