History & Status of the Fishery
Long Lake (ID# 11-0480) is a 284-acre lake about one mile south of the City of Walker, MN. Long Lake has 4.16 miles of shoreline with a maximum depth of 80 feet. A US Forest Service public access is located near the south end of Long Lake. A navigable channel on the north end of Long Lake provides boat access to May Lake.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Long Lake is in Lake Class 23. The lake is managed primarily for Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Black Crappie and secondarily for Bluegill and Cisco (Tullibee).
Northern Pike were more abundant in Long Lake than in most other lakes in Class 23. The average length of Northern Pike found during DNR test netting was about 21 inches, though fish up to 30 inches were sampled. Largemouth Bass were commonly caught, with fish up to 18 inches being sampled. Black Crappie were present but not abundant in the 2013 DNR sampling and fish up to almost 11 inches were sampled. Bluegill and Pumpkinseed Sunfish were abundant in Long Lake. Though many were less than 6 inches long, fish were also found in the 6- or 7-inch categories. Other species sampled in Long Lake were Hybrid Sunfish, Rock Bass, Walleye, White Sucker, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch.
People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resources office.
Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the MNDNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Walker Area Fisheries office.
