History & Status of the Fishery
Island Lake is located two miles north of Backus in west central Cass County. Island Lake is 93 acres, has 1.6 miles of shoreline, and a maximum depth of 14 feet. The littoral area comprises 100 percent of the lake area and results in frequent winter kills. The Pine River enters the lake on the north end and exits on the south end. Sufficient oxygen was found down to the bottom and the total alkalinity was 142.5 p.p.m. Test netting indicated a good population of northern pike, yellow perch, brown bullhead, bluegill and pumpkinseed. The brown bullheads average approximately one pound.
