History & Status of the Fishery
BOWFIN APPEAR TO BE FAIRLY NUMEROUS IN BASS LAKE. THEIR POPULATION MAY AID IN CONTROLLING THE NUMBER OF SMALL BLUEGILL. THE NORTHERN PIKE GILLNET CATCH IS EQUIVALENT TO THE CATCH OBSERVED DURING THE 1967 ASSESSMENT. MOST OF THE FISH SAMPLED WERE SMALL. THEIR GROWTH WAS GOOD. THE SAMPLE OF BLUEGILL COLLECTED IS SIMILAR TO THE SAMPLE FROM 1967, EXCEPT THAT THE PERCENTAGE OF FISH GREATER THAN SEVEN INCHES HAS DECREASED (RSD-7 - 1967, 19; 1990, 6). THE PERCENTAGE GREATER THAN EIGHT INCHES HAS REMAINED STABLE. BLUEGILL GROWTH RATES ARE RELATIVELY SLOW. PRIMARILY DUE TO THE TYPES OF SAMPLING GEAR EMPLOYED DURING THE ASSESSMENT, FEW BLACK CRAPPIE OR LARGEMOUTH BASS WERE SAMPLED. THE YELLOW PERCH POPULATION APPEARS TO BE LOW.
