History & Status of the Fishery
Moose is a 125 acre lake with 41 acres (33%) of littoral area and a maximum depth of 67 feet. Moose Lake (also known as Little Moose Lake) is located two miles east of the Town of Moose Lake off County Hwy #137. Moose Lake has a privately owned campground with a sand boat access. Moose Lake was last surveyed in 1999. Moose Lake was assessed during the summer of 2009 to update information about fish populations.
Walleye abundance of 0.2 per gillnet lift was down from 1999 (0.7) and was below average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. One large (26.9 inch) walleye was captured. Walleye are not stocked into Moose Lake by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
A total of 57 largemouth bass were sampled with electrofishing equipment. The catch rate of largemouth bass was 125.6 fish per hour of electrofishing on-time. Largemouth bass average length was 13.3 inches. All year-classes from 1998 through 2006 were represented in the sample. Thirty-seven percent of the largemouth bass sampled were over 15 inches in length.
Black crappie abundance of 1.8 per trapnet lift was down from 1999 (3.3) but average when compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Black crappie mean length was 8.0 inches and growth was average when compared to other Duluth Area lakes. All year-classes from 2002 through 2007 were represented in the sample except the 2003 year-class. The 2005 year-class was strong, comprising 52% of the captured fish.
Bluegill abundance of 30.2 per trapnet lift was up from 1999 (9.2) and average when compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Average length of sampled bluegills was 5.7 inches and growth was slow when compared to other Duluth Area lakes. All year-classes from 1998 to 2006 were represented.
Northern pike abundance of 9.0 per gillnet lift was up from 1999 (4.7) and above average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Mean length was 20.7 inches. Only 7% of the northern pike captured were over 24 inches in length.
Yellow perch abundance of 10.3 per gillnet lift was up from 1999 (0.8) and was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Average length of perch was 6.0 inches. Only 4.8% of the perch captured were greater than 7 inches in length.
Yellow bullhead abundance of 4.4 per trapnet lift was up from 1999 (0.0) and was average compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Yellow bullhead mean length was 11.5 inches.
Other fish species sampled include golden shiner, pumpkinseed, rock bass and white sucker.
