History & Status of the Fishery

Corona is a 24.5 acre lake with 12.1 acres (49%) of littoral area and a maximum depth of 30 feet. The lake is located 4 miles west of Sawyer and one half mile south of Highway 210. The lake is accessible by a 0.2 mile long footpath from a small parking area at the end of Long Lake Road. Corona was surveyed during the summer of 2007 to update information about fish populations.

Corona Lake is managed as a put-and-take rainbow trout fishery with annual yearling stocking at a rate of 100 per surface acre (2,500). The lake is stocked with yearling rainbow trout averaging 7 to 9 inches. Maximum depth is 30 feet, but oxygen is often deficient at depths greater than 12 feet. Since most shoal areas drop off quickly, shore fishing can be effective.

Rainbow trout gillnet abundance of 1.0 per lift was up slightly from 1997 (0.7). Rainbow trout catch has remained fairly stable from 1989 through 2007 ranging between 0.5 and 1.0 fish per gillnet and 0.7 to 2.0 fish per trapnet. However, during this assessment the trapnet catch increased to 4.8 per lift. Trout were likely more susceptible to being caught in trapnets during this assessment because sampling was conducted later in the fall when water temperatures are cooler and fish are likely shallower. Rainbow trout average length was 9.7 inches. Two year-classes were present, but 95% of fish sampled were from this springs stocking event, resulting in most of the fish measuring from 8 to 10 inches. A few fish survive the winter and attain a size of 12 inches or more. Growth is very slow for newly stocked fish in Corona Lake.

Other fish species sampled include low numbers of golden shiners and abundant brown bullheads. Brown bullhead trapnet catch of 12.1 per lift was also above average compared to other similar lakes and higher than 1997 (6.7).
