History & Status of the Fishery
Toad Lake is locally known as a good all-around fishing lake. Angling for Walleye, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, sunfish, and crappies can all be good at times during an average year. The lake has several large stands of emergent plants and abundant submerged plants which serve as fish habitat.
In 2016, gill net catch rate for Northern Pike was 10.2 fish per net which is near the historical average and above what is expected of similar lakes. Northern Pike ranged in length from 12.9 to 31.5 inches with average of 21.1 inches. In previous surveys no more than 10% of Northern Pike exceeded 24 inches. In 2016, 21% were at least 24 inches.
Walleye fingerlings are stocked every odd year and abundant year-classes of Walleye corresponded to years when stocking occurred. Walleye gill net catch rate was 9 fish per net which is lower than the historical average but just above what is expected for similar lakes. Average length of Walleyes was 18.0 inches and ranged from 8.0 to 28.0 inches.
Yellow Perch catch increased slightly from the previous survey to 2.6 fish per net in 2016. However, this remains below the historical average. Mean Yellow Perch length was 6.2 inches and ranged from 5.4 to 8.2 inches.
Mean trap net catch rate for Bluegills was 27.9 which is above the historical average. Bluegills averaged 6.3 inches and ranged from 3.4 to 9.1 inches. Ten age groups were represented, but strong 2011 and 2012 year classes composed 60% of total Bluegill catch. On average, Bluegills were found to reach 8 inches in 8 years.
Trap net catch of Largemouth Bass was 1.6 fish per set which is less than the historical average but above what is expected for similar lakes. Largemouth Bass averaged 8.0 inches and ranged from 4.8 to 16.1 inches.
Black Crappie trap net catch was the highest ever reported for Toad Lake at 2.5 fish per net. This catch is well above the historical average of 0.6 fish per net. Black Crappies ranged from 4.8 to 12.2 inches with an average size of 9.5 inches. Black Crappie reached 10 inches long in 5 years.
Other fish species sampled in 2016 included all species of Bullheads, Bowfin, Pumpkinseed and Hybrid Sunfish, Common Carp, Rock Bass, and White Sucker.
