History & Status of the Fishery
Boot Lake is located northwest of Two Inlets, MN in eastern Becker County. Boot has a surface area of 385 acres and a maximum depth of 109 feet. A Department of Natural Resources (DNR) owned public access is located on the northwest shore of the lake. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical, chemical, and other characteristics. Boot Lake is in lake class 23. Class 23 lakes generally are very deep, with low littoral area, and very clear but hard water. Other class 23 lakes in the Park Rapids area include: Big Bass, Benedict, Blue, East Crooked, Spearhead, and Tripp.
Walleye abundance has varied through the years, but has generally been at the high end of other class 23 lakes. Many Walleyes are a great size for anglers of 14-21 inches, with some smaller fish for the future. The average length was 17.5 inches, with the largest sampled at 26 inches. Yellow Perch are important forage for Walleye and Northern Pike, and their abundance was low compared to other class 23 lakes. Perch had an average size of 6.5 inches and were sampled up to 8 inches.
Northern Pike abundance was average compared to class 23 lakes, and similar to past surveys on Boot. Pike ranged from 8 inches to 34 inches in length, with an average size of 18 inches and 1.5 pounds.
Angling opportunities for panfish include Black Crappie and Bluegill. Black Crappie are not sampled well in nets on Boot Lake. Bluegills abundance was similar to recent years, with fish ranging from 3-8 inches.
Largemouth Bass abundance was similar to past surveys, and to other lake class 23 lakes. Fish ranged from 5 to 18 inches, with an average size of 11 inches.
Currently no Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) have been identified in Boot Lake. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access.
