History & Status of the Fishery
Round Lake is a moderately large, deep, clear water lake located approximately 2 miles north of Garrison. Round Lakes sandy shoreline, sharp drop-offs and crystal clear waters makes it a great place for a wide range of recreational activities including fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, parasailing and scuba diving. The primary game fish species found in Round Lake include smallmouth bass, walleye and black crappie. Most of the smallmouth bass sampled were young fish, only two and three years of age. The strong 2001 and 2002 year classes should provide excellent angling opportunities in the near future. Walleye, while native to Round Lake, never produced a large population when left to rely on natural reproduction. But the walleye population has responded well to fingerling stocking. At the present time there is a strong year class of fish that are about 14 inches long that should provide some good fishing for several years. For those anglers seeking larger fish, two additional strong year classes are present. Walleye from the 1998 year class are now about 21 inches long and fish from the 1995 year class are averaging about 26 inches in length. Round Lake was known for its black crappie fishery. Due to habitat loss this population struggled for a period of time during the 1980s. The population appeared to be recovering in 1998 and has shown more improvement in this survey. Northern pike have never been abundant in Round Lake, but some large individuals are present in the population. The bottleneck for northern pike in Round Lake appears to be growing through the 18 to 24 inch range. This is the size where yellow perch are too small to provide enough energy for the northern pike to maintain a good growth rate and the northern pike are not large enough to utilize larger prey species such as cisco. Once they reach the size to utilize the abundant cisco population as prey, their growth rate increases, ultimately allowing some individuals to reach memorable size. Angler harvest is high when they reach this size, limiting the population further.
