Bass Lake is a 57 acre lake of low fertility located 3 miles west of the town of McGregor in Aitkin County. A small proportion of the lake's surface area makes up shallow water areas less than 15 feet in depth which provide habitat for food production, fish spawning, and fish cover. These areas are located primarily along the north and south ends of the lake. The immediate shoreline surrounding Bass Lake is composed of lake homes and seasonal cabins intersparsed with mixed hardwoods and a small area of marsh land along the north/northwest shore. According to the current lake management plan, a lake survey should have occurred in 1998; however, due to time constraints and low priority status the evaluation was postponed until adequate time became available. Bass Lake is considered a low priority lake because of its small size, lack of public access, and self sustaining fish population. Currently, the lake is managed primarily for bluegill sunfish with black crappie and yellow perch as the secondary management species.During the open water season of 2001, a fish population assessment was conducted to evaluate the current status of the fish population and water quality. Fish sampling gear types consisted of gill and trap nets. Bluegill sunfish numbers were normal for this type of lake while the average size remains small and growth remains slow. Black crappie abundance and average size were found at normal levels along with their rate of growth. Sampled crappie numbers were down from 1993. Yellow perch numbers were within the normal range and average size remains small. The sampled fish community also included dog fish, largemouth bass, northern pike, pumpkinseed sunfish, rock bass, tullibee, and yellow bullhead. Dog fish, largemouth bass, northern pike, rock bass, tullibee, and yellow bullhead abundance fell below normal for lakes of this type while pumpkinseed sunfish numbers were within a normal range. Even after more than a decade of northern pike stocking, northern pike abundance increased only slightly and proved to be ineffective. Anglers seeking a peaceful fishing experience supplemented by catching a few fish may want to visit Bass Lake. A good number of small bluegill and a few black crappie will most likely provide the most action with an occasional northern pike, largemouth bass or tullibee. Because Bass Lake lacks a public access, anglers will have to obtain permission from a private landowner to access the lake. Bass Lake is characterized by low fertility and a small total area of shallow water; hence, food production and available spawning habitat are limited. Consequently, this lake is not likely to produce abundant numbers of bigger panfish. Shoreline property owners and surrounding land users within the watershed can maintain or improve water quality by protecting or re-establishing buffer strips along the shoreline of the lake with native plants; updating outdated or failing septic systems; using phosphorus free fertilizer (if needed) on surrounding lawns, gardens, and crop land; utilizing farming practices that reduce run-off; limiting aquatic plant removal or disturbance; and limiting construction of impervious surfaces near the shoreline.
