June 12. Found a couple of smallmouth on and near beds. I did hook one, threw at another for 15 minutes and gave up. Largemouth action for me just hasn't been good. No matter what I try I'm getting 12"-14" fish. I tried from 2' to 18'. I know guys are getting nice ones. Need to figure it out!

After all this rain, the lake temperature really dropped since Saturday. Although I posted the same temperature, main lake and current was at 51 degrees. I fished in back bays where the water temperature was 55 to 56 degrees. I did try the colder water to start with and nothing to be found except little pike. Once I moved into 54 degree water, fish started biting. Once I moved to 55 and 56 degree water, the fish were biting like crazy and the warmer the pocket the bigger the fish. In 4 hours I caught about 30 largemouth. Keep in mind I wasted about 1 hour in colder water. All the fish were caught on a 3/8 oz jig or a 5" Northland Dipstick. The bigger fish were caught on the Northland Dipstick. I did catch a bunch of small fish, but I did catch a couple 3 pounders and a few 2 pounders. If it were a tournament, I wouldn't have done well, but boy did I have fun catching fish today. Tomorrow should be really good before the rain comes in. Good luck!

This is from opening day Saturday May 9th. Conditions from May 9th to the time of this report have likely not changed and if nothing else the lake temperature has likely gone down a bit. I was so happy to be out on opener and actually targeting bass. Today was not about how many or how big of bass I would catch, but it was about enjoying being out, gathering some sun and staying warm. I stayed out of the wind all day. I fished shallow docks for the most part. I caught 12 bass in 3 hours, all of them in the 10" to 12" range. No question those small bass were shallow and the big ones were not. I know some shallow spots where the big largemouth will gather and they aren't there yet. A little warm up on Friday and then supposed to be much warmer over the weekend. If you can avoid the lightning and the water temperature gets above 60 degrees, it could be pretty interesting.

I thought it might be a bit early for the crappies on Whitefish and I was right. I never saw or hooked a crappie. Water temp was 58 degrees away from any current and near and in the current ranged from 54 to 56 degrees. I only had a short time to fish and targeted 2 areas that traditionally hold crappies. Supposed to be 79 here Saturday and would suspect action will be pretty good come Saturday.

Friday September 13: Tournament day was today. A couple of nice 5 fish bags were brought in weighing over 16 pounds. I didn't find that kind of bag today. I found once nice 3+ pounder under a shallow dock early in the day. After that I started fishing weedlines and really couldn't come up with much. Caught 1 small one on a buzzbait. Then headed to a sharp break that lead to a big flat and threw a spinnerbait. Caught a few fish there, but nothing big. Had lots of bites, but couldn't hook very many. Seemed to be a very light bite. Finished the day fishing a lot of docks and that was not the answer as we only could muster a couple of fish. Final weight was just under 11 pounds for 5 fish. Tough day on the water for me.

I was concerned heading to the lake today that the bite would be slow with the cold temperatures arriving and abundant blue skies. I was correct early on as the bite was lousy. No fish the first 2 hours. After that I caught this fish on a Booyah 3/8oz jig with a Yum craw trailer. This fish was pushing 5 pounds. Caught 2 other fish in the same area on the same set up. Went to another area and found fish going after bait fish. Threw a Heddon Spook and that was fun. All small fish but they were aggressive and caught about 6 in 30 minutes. Found some other fish with a Northland Dipstick on a Northland Lipstick hook. Ended the day on some docks and caught another fish pushing 5 pounds on the Northland set up. Overall a pretty good day. 2 fish pushing 5 pounds and plenty of other action. The fish seem to be not on the weed edges, but just in a bit from the edge.

Got on the water about 6:15 and fish for 4 1/2 hours. It was getting pretty steamy and the fishing was frankly not all that great. I did catch about 7 bass with one being over 4 pounds off of a dock using a Northland Dipstick. The fish never seemed to grab the lure off of the bottom, it was always on the drop or when I gave it a twitch. I fished a jig plenty and got zero bites. I fished some top water early using a buzzbait and a spook resulted in no fish and no misses. I did talk to a guy who said drop shotting was working using 3" baits. Good luck and stay cool.

6/7/13. Forecast called for a nice day with sunny skies and light winds. They got the light winds correct, but it was mostly cloudy. I fished from 9-4. I caught 21 bass with some real small and the biggest was 2 pounds. I started in water that was 56 degrees and couldn't get any bites. I went to some protected back bays where the water temperature reached 59.8 degrees. The magic number was 59 degrees. Anything below that nothing would bite. I thought by the end of the day I would find some bigger fish moving up shallow with the sun coming out, but that was not the case. I did work some flats which can be very good post spawn, but nothing to be found on the flats. With the temperatures warming up this week, the lake temperature will also climb and the bigger fish should move shallow or they are going to be on the flats or right off the flats. Slow presentations should work well such as a Northland Dipstick. If you find that or a jig are not working, try a small crank bait like a Rapala DT 3 or 6. Good luck!

June 2, 2013: Knowing there was a tournament on the lake today, I figured if the smallmouth were biting, the tournament boats had already beaten them up so we went bucket mouth fishing today. I figured to at least get some bites, we needed to target shallow water (less than 8 feet) and the warmer the water, the better. We found water temperatures range from 62 degrees to 65 degrees. Where there was current, the water was cooler. We fished from 12:30 to 5:30. My wife fished exclusively Northland Dipsticks on a 3/16 oz. Northland Lipstick hook. My main presentation was the same, but I did throw a jig a few times. We caught about 20 bass ranging from 10" to a few 2.5 pounders. Docks held the smaller fish while the bigger fish were off of small rocks with weeds nearby. All of our fish were caught on the Northland presentation I mentioned earlier.

We caught several bass on spinnerbaits this past Saturday. We had to sort through the little pike from time to time. In the afternoon, things really heated up with the Northland Impulse Dipstick. Fishing steep breaks and throwing in 3 to 8 feet of water, the fish were not jumping in the boat, but they were quality 2 to 3 pound fish.
