We spent 6/15-6/19 targeting walleyes and did OK considering the huge mayfly hatch. Biggest walleye was about 23". Quite a few northern pike, biggest maybe 25", and perch up to about 10". A number of smallmouth bass, biggest 20". All fish caught on floating jigs, or leadheads tipped with a leech or 1/2 crawler.

leeches under a slip bobber is preferred method from late june til end of august..prior jigging and minnows work well..after september cranks and larger offerings do best...I use gulp..leeches, minnows, crawlers..much hardier than the real thing and i have noticed no drop off in the bite...

Thanks Nomadic Eye for your response. Any hints for next week for walleyes?

I generally stop into Independence once or twice a year..I am usually chasing pike at the east end of the lake..she has ample walleye..though not rod busters..good bass, great perch and panfish along with monster pike. Its pretty much a basin type lake with stumps and weeds heaviest at east end.You can surely catch enough for a few meals without great effort. If the water temp is high when you get there i would concentrate my efforts along dam area at north shore and for eyes at night. panfish are good along west end weed beds

Not a report. Just a question. Doesn't anyone fish and report on this lake. We will be up there in a week and wondering how the walleyes are biting. Also, how is the lake for smallmouth, perch, crappies, and northerns?

Fishing in general was slow up there last weekend at the Derby. :-( We only iced 5 Pike all weekend and 2 suckers in our group. No Eyes and no Perch. Not many fish even caught around us, unlike last year we caught and chased many more flags.

I believe the winning Perch was just shy of 14" and the winning Pike was at the 32" mark and the biggest Eye was 21". That was as of 2:30PM Sunday.

I am back in the UP this weekend near Ontonagon but won't be heading out on the ice at all since it is about -18deg this AM before any windchill!

At least the sun is out!

I was up visiting family in Marquette last weekend and took a drive up to Big Bay to check things out. It was around noon or so Saturday so I didn't see what the final results were... there were rumours of a 14" perch. So, how did you end up doing?
