Ice was still ok for me to walk around yesterday, but it's going quickly. Top layer is getting very soft. Better ice was on east end than west end. Oxygen levels were an issue in my opinion. Oxygen levels seemed fine during my trips to Bass Lake in Dec/January. Caught some pike then, nothing overly big, but it was not too hard to find green weeds in spots that I figured they'd be. Encountered sluggish pike the 2 times I was out in March and minnows dying on the first trip. Had the minnows higher in the column yesterday, plus oxygen might have been better with the warmer weather so minnows did better, think just one died. But, only caught 1 pike during those trips, only about 17 inches. Had some other flags, but no line run. Pike just probably swatting at the minnow and just not enough energy to swim away quickly. Green weeds were hard to find. But, did find a few smaller weed areas.

There was about 6 inches of ice out there. We did catch a few pike, but nothing huge.

Interesting to note: Last year the oxygen levels got real low on Bass. I was fishing in January and the minnows were all dying on me when I put them in the lake. I went back a few weeks later and got the minnows to survive by putting them just under the ice, where there must have been enough oxygen. But, both times I was skunked, as were the others with me. I talked with a guy who was spearing that said he saw a pike swim under him that was riding the top of the water column as well. That ice was thick last year with lots of snow.....Since it's such a shallow lake, I really wonder how poor oxygen levels affect the overall pike population and whether or not the bigger and older fish are able to survive low levels like that?

Unfortunate about your auger hopefully it turns up. I was wondering how much ice was on Bass lake and how the pike bite has been. I'm heading to camp tomorrow with my kids and one of there friends and looking to put them on some fish, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Just checking to see if anyone found a black Strikemaster Hand Auger. I left it to the left of the launch area and was going to pick it up on my way out but my son and I were unable to locate it when we were done fishing. It's an 8 inch hand auger and has a nail where the wing nut was. Thanks for any help. Tight lines.
