"My Dad and I have been fishing Butternut every year for a week over the 4th since I've been a little kid (30 years). I'm telling you, this summer of the week of the 4th of July was the best couple days of fishing I have ever had. We could not keep our rod in the water for smallies this time. We tried tubes, plastics, could not get anything. I know there are some people who won't use live bait and I respect that. All that to say we used live bait after striking out on plastics and crank baits. We caught a ton of smallies on leeches and some on crawlers (both just a hook, no sinker) in anywhere from 3' of water to 28'. Was as much fun as I've ever had fishing. Great smallmouth lake! My wrists and forearms were sore from the smallies. Great Trip! The fish were pretty much 14-20 inches. the largest being 21" and 4 lbs... We've caught some larger ones in the past, but not even close to this many each day. Wish I lived closer. Can't wait to go back. (WORTH THE DRIVE)"

"Has everything you`d expect from a top notch lake, it seems like the Pan fishing has fallen off."

"Big lake with lots of deep holes for trolling for walleye and northern."

"One of the best smallmouth bass fisheries in the upper state, for trophy and numbers. And yes Joe Bucher does film there, so if your lucky you might see him. Also some of the clearest blue water in the state, you can see to the bottom in 12 feet of water if not deeper. The walleye fishing is also top notch if you no what your doing. You can only keep one over 18 inches and one under 14 inches. The hardest walleye to get is one under 14 inches. It has two boat launches, the one on the south side is the best and has parking for about 15 rigs also has a outhouse."
One More Cast from Up North, Wisconsin(1/25/02)
"Best smallmouth lake in state for numbers and trophy potential-most Joe Bucher shows are filmed here for eyes & smallies-we've seen him filming. Seen 24"+ smallies on rock humps. Lake holds 20+ pound pike-hard to find. CPR!! Needs better boat landings!! Great eye lake too."
John Johnson from Pontiac, Illinois(6/25/01)
"It has always been a great Smallmouth Lake! Lake Association as worked their tails off putting up bass shelters all around the shorelines! Job well done!! Perch fishing as well as Walleye are nothing like they were when I was a kid coming up in the 60's, but then what waters are anymore. Spearing and fishing pressure seem to have put the hurt on the Walleye fishery in general. Northern fishing seems to be improving, possibly due to DNR's attempts to establish Butternut as a Trophy Northern Pike lake....we'll see. Doubt that this policy has helped out the Perch fishing either. Still continue to return to the beautiful waters of Butternut and the guess it ain't THAT bad huh??? Hope everyone has a great year on the water, and don't forget to C.P.R.!!!"
