Dewart is in the top five in the state for water quality(spring fed and little runoff from towns and farms). It is a very hard lake to fish as it has turned many fishermen frustrated and going elsewhere. I have lived on this lake for all my 43 years and the fishing rewards are great if you find 'em. The perch can be caught in numbers in the 10"-12 3/4" size. The crappies can be caught in limits in the 12" size. Bluegills are thick backs and 10"-12" regularly. The redear fishing on this lake is awesome as they tend to eat zebra mussles now. Walleye in the 5lb+ size thanks to stocking by the Dewart Lake Protective association and the South Bend/Elkhart Walleye Club(many thanks gents!) The fish are clean tasting and well fed and probably some of the best fish you can get in northern Indiana (I'm a little partial too). Access is from the public access on the west side of the lake and is usually busy on the weekends so parking is limited. Ice fishing is done at the launch as it was dredged by the DNR for larger boats. The ice is occasionally thick enough for light truck but mostly it's ATV's and snowmobiles getting on at the launch. Perch fishing has been catching on in the last few years through the ice. The northwest bay and the southeast bay seem to be the areas for all species ice fishing ever since I could remember. There is a channel at the southeast end of the lake for first ice crappies ,changing to bluegills as the season progresses, then into monster redear fishing! I don't fish for bass but I do occasionally catch them. The bass get a tremendous pressure in the summer anymore. There seems to be enough fishing pressure to have large fish they're just hard to find! Give it a try! It's worth it.
