I live 5 minutes away from the Des Plaines River. My boyfriend and I have discovered many fishing holes by researching Google Maps; we then scrounge around until we find a great spot. We've tried every type of artificial bait and numerous methods. Dam No. 1 Woods in Wheeling is where I caught my juvenile Northern Pike (picture of me with my fish on Des Plaines River pics). I used an old Ike bait that has been discontinued. It is jointed and bright red. Many fishermen claim colors don't matter but I have caught more fish on bright colors than anything else. Bright orange and red are the best, in my opinion. The river is obviously murky, so these colors show up well. My boyfriend caught his Northern Pike on a classic spoon (red diamonds on yellow). My general rule for the Des Plaines River in northern Cook County: bright, jointed crankbaits and spoons (and lots of them because you're bound to lose several) reeled in fast. Also, the crappie bite very often, and will hook on a bait that is half their size or more. Good luck!
