History & Status of the Fishery
The Lake is part of both the spring and fall inland rainbow trout seasons, and receives occasional fish surveys by IDNR or FPDCC Fisheries Staff to evaluate vegetation and fish species abundance and diversity. Smallmouth bass were supplementally stocked in this ?gravel pit? type lake to try and establish a population, but positive results have been difficult to verify so smallmouth bass stockings have been discontinued.

Approximately 10 species live in this system including those listed above, as well as black crappie, green sunfish, yellow perch, yellow bass, black bullhead, common carp, and white sucker.

Axehead lake usally is a very tough lake to fish. With extensive weed growth mostly likley from inorganic pollutents summer time fishing is tough from shore. There still is a steady bass population their. The fish are very pressurized, but still there are fisherman who can catch bass. Ice fishing on this lake is actually very good. There are tons of bluegills year round that are able to be caught, but ice fishing for them is almost fantastic here. Reports of perch caught through the ice have been made. Axehead always gets mixed reviews, as well as mixed results. Either way it can be a tough fish.
