History & Status of the Fishery
The fish population in Lake Mattoon is intensively surveyed every two years, primarily by electrofishing. The fish are measured, weighed, and scales collected before releasing them alive. Hybrid striped bass, and saugeye, populations are being maintained by annual stockings. In addition to the species listed above, yellow bass, longear sunfish, green sunfish, warmouth, and yellow and black bullheads are present, but are seldom harvested by fishermen due to the small size attained by these species.

Lake Mattoon is an almost unknown little gem of a lake. The bass fishing is very good; an informal tournament is held every Saturday morning in the summer months and it usually takes a five fish limit of 12 lbs or better toeven place. The water willows that ring the lake provide good weed fishing when the water warms as does the riprap causeway that divides the lake. The lake supports huge populations of shad and when the large stripers start feeding the action can be heart stopping!

Lake Mattoon is a consistent middle aged lake. The crappie fishing is good here. Though you rarely haul in large slabbers the average size are keepers. Bass fishing can be hit or miss. You gotta find them in this lake but they are there. Tournaments are held by the local bass club. Catch and release is practiced religiously. Stocking of large mouths is done on a yearly to semi-annual basis. The largest Bass I've seen come from this lake were two 8# Largemouth taken the same day on live bait.Catfish are abundant with a 15# fish taken not uncommon.
