Does anyone know the ice conditions for the main lake?

I checked it out this morning thinking I might try it out Friday. I popped a hole from standing on the dock near entrance and was surprised to find only about 3" of ice with the top inch or 2 being white ice. Looked like only about 1.5" thick clear ice under dock. Small south basins were only about 1" near edge. Needless to say won't be trying there tomorrow. I didn't venture onto the ice at all...always a thinner ice pond with all the spring water

We ended up not even getting on the ice. After hearing your info and looking at the ice, we went up to Shabbona. Plenty of fish able ice up there. I was definitely surprised how much the ice changed at SS from last weekend.

CONDITIONS
Sunny

ICE DEPTH
4 inches

AIR TEMP
31° - 35° F

WATER TEMP
Below 40° F
Went out sunday 02-24. Someone had punched 4 holes the day before on the south west shoreline. Big open water near the handicap dock. I ventured out popping holes from where the guys were the previous day. 4-5" on that shoreline where accessable, headed across to the north west shoreline and it got thinner. Made it about 30 yards from the shore and it was only 2.5-3" with snow and slush on top, maybe 4 turns of the 4" auger and through, walking away the water was bouncing in the holes a good 30' away from where I drilled. Its risky to say the least. Spoke to two guys as I came off, wondering what they decided to do? How they did? The smaller bottom pit had open water in the middle, didnt even go drill any holes. Didnt even really fish, bounced some plastics for about 15 minutes and left. Yorkville bait shop was closed or I would have dragged the shanty out and gave minnows a shot. After this weeks warm up and snowfall is pretty much going to be a lost cause!

Be safe GL out there..

Hey DarkStar. Was out there Sat morning the 9th. Edges had thinned a bit from the rain a few days earlier, but still had about 4.5"-5" once you got about 10'+ out from shore. Not sure what that huge rain and warm weather we got Sunday did to the ice. Haven't been out since.
