Fished off the river this A.M. Suprized there was still about 7" of ice and the shorelines were not that bad. Brought home 5 nice crappies and a gill just under 9"and let some dinks go.One more time tomorrow and then it's time to hit the dam for some walleyes this weekend.SW
Pretty much all decisions have to go through the executive director...that's that worst part because he's a outdoorsman himself. I'm going to do all I can to try and fight this. I haven't heard anything about enforcing this so far though so hopefully it just means that they will just take it off the website as an activity. I agree about the silly short hours at rock cut too!
Martin park should be considered a backwater of the Rock River and therefore would be considered public waters. The other two parks they can do what they want with. Rochelle, near me closed Lake Sule to Ice Fishing citing the cost to carry insurance. I would guess the same applies for Rockford. We do not have a large number of natural waters in this state compared to WI or MN. So, no tourism dollars from fishing and the voice of the fisherman is rarely heard. Shabbona park created a "friends of Shabbona lake" program to take donations and to bring issues like this to the state. Like park hours which are sadly short at Rock cut.... That's my own complaint though!
Just an FYI...the Rockford park district sent out an email to all of its employees to inform us that they are not going to allow ice fishing on there property. The email only mentioned Martin park, Levings lake, and Windsor lake but it seemed they were saying eveywhere. I personally think this is total bs. I will do my best to fight this but I wouldn't worry too much about it. They don't own the water ;) I will keep you all updated on this matter. I see there were just some holes punched at sports core...did somebody find some fish over there finally? Tight lines all!

Went to Martin Park today fished from 9a - 2p today. I caught two gills, one would have been a keeper if I was catching more. Had plenty of bites, the fish were real finiky there. I saw two nice bluegills some idiot left on the ice. It's disheartening to see people doing that. If you don't want the fish then don't fish.
