Latest update: there is now a "lake marshal" patrolling on a bike. I use the term marshal in jest since this guys rides around on a bike and stops people and questions them about if they have any fish or are in possession of a valid fishing lic. He is not a police officer or conservation officer, but a public works employee. I had words with him after he approached me and asked me for my license. I had no idea who he was and asked for his credentials, he pointed at a worn, faded, ragged T-shirt that said "city of so beloit" on it. I walked away from him and told him to stop bothering me as he has no authority to stop me. Nothing happened, his feathers were ruffled a bit, he rode off blowing his whistle at some kids who were throwing rocks in the water. Example: conservation police have stopped me 3 x this year, marked squad car, conservation officer in full uniform and the 1st thing he says as he approaches is "conservation officer, can i see your license"...gee the marshal dude doesnt have a clue.....

So Beloit is truly screwed up, they have no concept or plans of moving that towns operations into the 21st. century. unfortunately, its their playground and they make the rules plus they now receiving lots of tax $$$ from the new service plazas at I-90 and now the silly council-oops city council thinks they are running New York city. Things are not going change, small town politics at its finest. My advice, don't support any businesses in so. beloit and if you did let them know you are not going to in the future, stop in the hardware store of Blackhawk Blvd...owned by a council member....pile up a bunch of stuff on the counter....then ask if you can use your boat in the lake, being a non-res,....when he says no.....say, "oh really, then i can't shop here". They sure did, now their lake has more then doubled. What sucks is that the only way to really access the new section is by boat, for now anyway.

unfortunately the only people allowed to launch a boat there are residents of south beloit. You have to have a sticker which is bought from the city in order to launch there. NO sticker means a 75 dollar fine.

Before the other lake was accessible anyone could launch there. Doesn't make sense.

I heard Elmhurst donated their lake to the city. Is this true?? I fished there a few years ago when it was still the property of Elmhurst.

hey guys been reading thru this and I agree the no boat law is crap, I live very close to this lake in wingate sub and have neighbors to the south of me in meadow crest subdivision that are considererd south beloit residents im considererd rockton twn ship so how about if we cant put our boats on their lake they can't use rockton or roscoes boat launches to get to the rockton dam and the sand hole or the rockriver for that matter.this lake is very hard to fish from the shore and a boat would be great if this is funded by state money can they restrict the public

It's a waste of time to try and get things changed. The petition deal never got started due to the fact that I ended up as a committee of 1. I've talked to members of the SoBo city council on 2 occasions and they want no part of opening the lake to outside boaters. It doesn't make sense to me but its their pond and they can do with it what they want. It is now the 2nd largest public lake in Winn county and only residents of the City of SoBo can launch boats. I tried to use the South Beloit mailing address trick but no go. The said part about is, go there on a beautiful spring day, or summer weekend and see 1 or 2 boats out on the lakes, what a waste of a resource. The lake holds some large, large fish of all species, including walleye and muskie. It will be opening soon after ice out and I'll be there nailing some of those 15" crappie. Homer

Has anything come from this petition or other stuff everyone is talking about. You don't have to be a South Beloit Resident. You have to be a VILLAGE resident. I have a South Beloit address and I pay and vote for the South Beloit schools, but I can't use a boat on the lake because I don't I don't live in the village. Sounds like DISCRIMINATION too me.Any info would be appreciated.
